Although I find some parts of the game boring and not every joke lands Undertale is a game I had lots of fun playing and was a great refresher from all the darker games I normally play.

Boy, did I have absolutely no idea what I was getting into. This is a 2D “bullet-hell” RPG created by one talented individual, Toby Fox. First off, the soundtrack is sheer perfection in this game. The seamless blend of multiple themes into single songs, the sweeping synths and hilarious oddities, Toby Fox has absolutely nailed the world-building music that still tears across the internet to this day. These characters immediately grab your attention never let go. The story is well-crafted, introspective, and one of the most memorable I have ever played. The combat is fun and challenging, and while it’s not my favorite, it gets the job done.What I can’t talk about here is what you need to experience for yourself, which is basically everything else. A must-play gem.Final Score: 9.5/10

The room "Canine Temple" is special for the Xbox version (in fact it clears the mess that occurred in that room in previous versions) you can decorate it with a console and a Kinect parody. (For now) It's on Xbox Game PassThe bad:The story "Speed run" is very easy (Minus the final bosses). There is no way to save several games to go modifying and seeing the multiple possibilities, the game overwrites the file and there is no way to experiment unless you crash or start a new game. Easy achievements but ... it's 160G of achievements totally dependent on luck and randomness (one slot machine). Another 360G money donations you win on the slot machine that depends on previous achievements.Meh it!If yours is a ‘lot of text’, avoid it. If you hate pixelated graphics, avoid it. If you hate turn-based RPGs avoid it. If you don't like meta-references, puns, and simple jokes, avoid it. If you hate Bullet-Hell or ship games, avoid it. The ‘Fun value’ will now be totally random, there is no possibility of seeing some things unless you are very lucky. As it does not have a Windows interface, it is not possible to fiddle with the files to do certain things in the game or to see the secrets. Even after so many years it is still a meme factory

The characters are either bland and two-dimensional or so in-your-face annoying that it made me want to stop playing. The music and sound effects were fine, but nothing special. The combat was unique, but it quickly turned into a bullet-hell game, which I'm not a huge fan of, causing the combat to lose any of the charm that it might have otherwise had.The only positive I can say about the game is a minor one in that it offered the Mercy system (a way to spare enemies rather than killing them). At first glance, this seemed like a really cool feature, but in the end, it was just a different name for a skill system like so many other games. In both systems you end up having to memorize what works for each type of enemy and what doesn't, so it doesn't really matter if you want to call that menu option Fireball or Hug.Maybe without the hype I'd heard about this game since day one I would have enjoyed it more, but as is it was a complete waste of my time and I will definitely never be going back to see the different endings.

Undertale is still an innovative and refreshing videogame, with a hidden depth within a fake simplicity that it's communicated in a very effective way thanks to the gameplay. With its particular way to destroy the fourth wall, Undertale makes us the main character in a creepy but incredible way and makes us see that our decisions truly have consequences. Six years later, Toby Fox's masterpiece keeps being a must-be for any player and its release on Xbox One is, without a doubt, something to celebrate.

But your invested in the characters, the narrative, and your determined to see out the conclusion of whatever weird journey your on. I honestly think the best part about Undertale is the soundtrack. I really hated some of the bosses it pits you against, and i honestly think if it wasn't for the upbeat, enthusiastic music, i might have given up at points.Here comes my problem with the game then, it's gameplay is naff, boring and has a difficulty scale that's so up and down it made me feel a little sick. I realise the game wants to be unpredictable, vary it's gameplay, difficult when you don't expect it. However, all of the tedious walking, in, let's face it, ugly environments, and the strangely easy puzzles, result in a game that feels disjointed, unbalanced, at times, frustrating.As a whole though, Undertale is brilliant.

What else can I say? Undertale is spectacular, even three years later. It’s a game that deserves every bit of praise that it receives, and a game that the people who love it are going to remember for a long, long time. I can’t express how happy I am to have had the opportunity to experience it again on the Switch.

Going through the experience today, it’s easy to see why Undertale was the talk of the town two years ago. It’s not an overly long playthrough, but it’s an impactful 7+ hours. A slow burn that starts off cute, but builds up to an absolutely thrilling last couple hours. I’m not sure if the Pope has gotten around to playing it yet, but he would be doing himself a disservice if he hasn’t.

Undertale is a brilliant and smartly designed game that understands well what makes a good RPG work; so much so that it can upend expectations and deliver something that’s almost a satire of the genre. It’s been a long time since we’ve played a game that manages to surprise so often and in so many unique ways, and even if it doesn’t look like much, Undertale has way more going for it under the surface. Excellently written characters, a genre-bending battle system and a solid soundtrack make this one an easy recommendation, especially to RPG lovers. Do yourself a favour and give this one a download.

It’s rare for a game to so ruthlessly and completely nail the altered reality games place us in the way Undertale does. Whether it’s the nameless NPCs you always meet in RPGs or the hundreds of mooks you mow down with gunfire in games like Uncharted, Undertale brilliantly demystifies these conventions and questions why games are still codified this way. But even outside of its ambitious themes, it proves to be a compact, perfectly paced RPG experience with hilarious, tense writing and endearing characters. That it succeeds so completely in its thematic approach on top of all that is what makes Undertale a truly essential experience.
