The game has a lot of backtracking and loadscreens: If you play it on the Switch version, you will notice that depending on the room you go to, the loading screens can be long. Something we didn't necessarily like about the games of the era the title is inspired by.2. In addition to the above, there are scenes and parts in the game that demand a lot to the console and cause lag, the optimization of the Switch version is not the best, but still playable.3. Later in the game, the music becomes a bit repetitive, there is not much soundtrack in the game.What makes the game excellent:The map design of the entire mansion is exquisite, replete with details that make exploring the game a real pleasure. The design of the enemies and puzzles is no slouch either. The art direction of the game as well as its story is what makes the game an experience not to be missed if you like the survival horror genre.Despite the negative details, the game manages to stand out on its own and becomes a must-play survival horror.

Tormented Souls is a fabulous return to classic survival horror, the likes of which haven’t been seen for years. Even horror novices will gel with it because it updates the genre just enough to be accessible in 2022.

Aside from the changes to the feel and efficiency with the cursor controls and some stuttering cutscenes, Tormented Souls remains one of the few successful attempts at recreating that late 90s survival horror vibe. Cinematic camera movements and a beautiful but eerie atmosphere (not to mention nightmarish monsters) lends some scariness to the game, while terrible voice acting and a strangely bare plot leaves players with more questions than answers by the time the game is over. It would seem the best and most authentic way to play Tormented Souls would be on Playstation 4, Xbox One, or PC. The very slight graphical improvements on a smaller mobile screen don’t take away the benefits of playing on other consoles.

It uses the same camera as RE: Code Veronica in that it's a mixture between fixed point camera angles and a moving/panning camera to match your movement. The voice acting is a little cheesy but again, i think that's a nod back to Res Evil 1. Graphics are perfectly fine.The gameplay is proper old school. You save by finding tape. You then have to find a recorder. Similar to the ink ribbon/type writer system on Res Evil. The tapes are in short supply though so you have to be mindful of when you save. Whilst i have had to (annoyingly) replay an hour of gameplay again due to dying, this really adds to the tension as you need to make the decision whether to save, or try to go a bit deeper in before saving. You can use the left thumb stick to move (normal/modern) or use the D pad for tank controls (my preference). Puzzles were plentiful and whilst i'd say they were harder than the early RE games, they weren't too taxing. Item management is back. However, whilst it works very similar to the early RE games, items are split into groups for easy management and also there is no limit on how much you can carry.Once enemies are dead, they stay dead. Their bodies even stay in the place you killed them which is a neat little touch. This makes exploring easier and allows you to make "safe routes" between key areas.The darkness kills you. So if there is no external light source, you need to use your lighter to survive. This does become problematic when there are enemies as you can't equip the lighter and a weapon at the same time.Physical version comes with a map of the Hospital and Mansion too which was a nice touch. i loved this game but i did grow up on the old survival horror games back when they were hard. This won't be a walk in the park for those who like to have a regular auto save and hint system. And if you misjudge saving/not saving, you could have an hour of gameplay to replay. But that's what survival horror is all about.

There are no skill based action mechanics, its not hard or fulfilling to play a part again, its just a chore...Right now my game crashed and I d have to play a good part over again, i think I rather go watch a playtrough...On the bright side good atmosphere and some decent puzzles (nothing like silent hill), but its very much worth it for the price. Tormented Souls is a love letter and throwback to the old school survival horror games, warts and all, even including the age-old tank controls found in the games it looks to emulate. Honestly, it does a good job in this, setting the atmosphere, ramping up the stakes and only rarely venturing into the absurd when it comes to puzzle logic. While not completely innocent, with some nonsense puzzles, and a questionable art style for the protagonist, there's enough on offer to keep you going and it makes it more than worth the reasonable price of the game.

Admittedly, it is refreshing to see this classic style of game brought back to modern consoles, and some players may even appreciate the way this feels like an at-times-terrifying ’90s throwback. But even if you can look past its unoriginality, the lack of polish in stiff voice acting, character animation, and numerous bugs break the immersion. Retro revivals are cool, but if a game brings nothing new to the table and ends up worse than the existing ones it’ll inevitably be compared to, you may as well just dust off the old PlayStation and play those instead.

It’s hard to hold any of Tormented Souls’s flaws against the game since so many of them are by design. It’s very strict adherence to the classics of survival horror means you have a game that can easily frustrate, but also captivates with its struggle for survival like very few horror titles do these days. Under its broke survival horror airs, Tormented Souls is much more solid than it looks, not least thanks to its very controlled production and atmosphere. It is with great pleasure that we walk through the corridors of a very mysterious manor, until we find ourselves faced with puzzlingly difficult puzzles, further weighed down by a map that is sorely lacking in information. The thrill of discovery then turns into a frustrating stroll, especially during a second part which requires going through most of the rooms already visited. Other flaws (animations, inventory) add to the overall weight even more, without overwhelming it. So we end up with a nice tribute to Resident Evil and Silent Hill of the time, but not especially in the face of an unmissable survival horror. To try anyway.
