Although I love such games, but played a lot of more quality works. I did not like this one, although I saw what was being done for a reason, with some interesting ideas to do, with puzzles. But in the end it turned out that the game seems like... it’s like all the elements are only half done, and then someone like the story-writer became lazy, someone like the designer just got tired, and someone like someone else finished the work only by order. And after a certain moment it becomes just boring. But I also gave a half rating, not a low, because I think that there will be gamers that can like this game... those who wouldn't be such picky as I was.

Anodyne is indeed reminiscent of 2D Zelda titles, but it manages to not be bound by comparisons as it offers a fresh and welcome take on this style of game. Though some brute force combat hinders the experience, it uses certain ingredients from the games that influenced it while also injecting its own brand of humour, presentation, and gameplay into the mix to create an experience that fans of the genre should not miss.

Despite some of its shortcomings, mainly pertaining to rudimentary combat, Anodyne is an enjoyable and – more importantly – memorable experience.

Exploring in the game always feels rewarding because there always seems to be that there is something new for you to find. There is a decent variety of enemies you come across during your time with the game and I must admit that I was especially impressed with the bosses. Each mechanic the game possesses has been implemented really well and they all add something to the overall gameplay. There’s an array of different puzzles you have to wade through and I must admit that I was surprised by how creative the puzzles were. The combat is fun in short bursts it does get repetetive quite quickly and that’s mainly due to the lack of depth the combat has. The game is a little on the short side and it did leave me wanting more. It can get quite difficult out of nowhere at times which cab cause you to be a little frustrated every now and then. Anodyne definitely has a Zelda-esque vibe going for it but that doesn’t mean that it’s like Zelda. Instead this game has its own identity as well and when it’s all said and done it delivers a very rewarding and fun adventure to you. One of the main reasons why the game is so fun and enjoyable is due to the number of mechanics the game possesses because each mechanic adds something to the gameplay. This then means that exploring is always worthwhile and if the combat had more depth to it then you would nearly have a perfect experience with this game. Thankfully though the shortcomings it does have aren’t too profound and the variety it has made me forget about the little niggling problems. I do wish however that the game was a little longer because the different enemies and different puzzles within the game left me wanting more. That being said the content it does have makes recommending Anodyne very easy and I’m sure fans of these types of game’s will love what Anodyne has to offer.

Although it’s nowhere near as compelling nor as deep as its inspirational material, Anodyne offers a fun, worthwhile and well paced journey. The game uses its few gameplay mechanics to great effect, and although it would have been nice to see more innovation and depth as far as its combat is concerned, there’s no denying that Anodyne is one of the better examples of Zelda-esque adventuring.
