Captain Tsubasa II: World Fighters trailer breaks down all game modes

Bandai Namco's new trailer for the August 28 sequel spotlights New Stars, Legendary/Advanced and Rivals Episode story modes, plus online and practice play.

Bandai Namco has dropped a dedicated Mode Introduction trailer for Captain Tsubasa II: World Fighters, offering the clearest look yet at the full suite of content coming with the game. The title is slated for Nintendo Switch 2 on August 28. It also launches the same day on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam.

Three story modes, one world stage

The trailer’s headline feature is the split approach to the single-player campaign. The “NEW STARS” Story Mode is based on the “World Youth Arc” and lets players experience it from the perspective of a fully customisable character on the Japanese national team – building bonds with manga characters to learn their moves and making a mark on the world stage alongside Tsubasa.

In the “LEGENDARY/ADVANCED” Story Mode, new narratives including “original storylines” not found in the original manga unfold under the supervision of series creator Yoichi Takahashi. A third strand, “RIVALS EPISODE”, offers exclusive side stories focusing on rivals from around the world as they train to reach even greater heights.

Customisation and online play

Beyond the campaign, players can customise a character’s appearance, physique and signature moves through “PLAYER EDIT” and “TEAM EDIT” features, aiming for the world title alongside their national team. A “PRACTICE Mode” lets players sharpen skills at their own pace, while “REGULAR MATCH” opens up competition against others around the globe.

What hands-on previews say

Ahead of the trailer, press previews painted a positive picture of the gameplay itself. After a hands-on session, Siliconera described it as “a more dynamic soccer game,” noting a more active approach to matches with flashy moves that both human players and the CPU can deploy to shake up outcomes. One of the biggest differences cited versus the predecessor is the addition of Super Dribbles, Passes and Tackles beyond the Super Shots already present in Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions.

The game is developed by Tamsoft Corporation and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment. It is the biggest Captain Tsubasa game yet, featuring 22 national teams, over 110 playable characters and more than 150 new moves.

With the real-world FIFA World Cup 2026 underway this summer, the timing for a manga-faithful anime football sequel could hardly be better. World Fighters looks to carve its own niche well away from simulation, leaning into superhuman moves and story-driven spectacle that no EA Sports title will ever offer. The range of modes shown in this trailer – especially the fully supervised original storylines from Takahashi himself – gives the package more depth than a typical sports sequel.
