From itch.io Experiment to 8 Million Sales
The road to Xbox was a long one for this small horror game. Buckshot Roulette was developed and published by Estonian indie developer Mike Klubnika, originally releasing on itch.io. Released on 28 December 2023, the game became popular in early 2024 and was praised by critics and players for its strategic gameplay and replay value. It was then released on Steam by publisher Critical Reflex on 4 April 2024.
The Steam launch sold a million copies in two weeks, and by December 2024 the game had sold 4 million copies. That figure has since grown substantially – developer Mike Klubnika and publisher Critical Reflex later announced the game surpassed 8 million copies sold on PC. The game holds an Overwhelmingly Positive rating on Steam.
Buckshot Roulette quickly gained popularity on Twitch and TikTok, which subsequently led to increased popularity on YouTube. The Xbox launch is the culmination of a console port that faced earlier setbacks – the team initially wanted to launch on consoles in 2025 but encountered technical difficulties, mostly because tackling console ports in the Godot engine turned out to be quite a task.

What the Game Is
The regular game mode involves the player playing a modified game of Russian roulette in a nightclub with a mysterious entity known as “The Dealer”, using an eight-round pump-action shotgun instead of the revolver traditionally used in Russian roulette. Klubnika developed the game in the Godot engine and also composed the game’s soundtrack.
The Xbox version arrives with the full feature set intact. Here is a quick breakdown of what is included:
| Mode | Players | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Single-player | 1 | Story mode vs. The Dealer |
| Double or Nothing | 1 | Score-attack mode |
| Multiplayer | Up to 4 | Crossplay via Xbox Play Anywhere |
The multiplayer suite is a notable addition. According to the developer, the mode was originally a post-launch PC update driven by persistent community requests, and it arrives bundled in the Xbox version with crossplay between Xbox platforms via Xbox Play Anywhere. The developer notes that the multiplayer redesign required reworking the player characters, the table layout, and even the game’s soundtrack.
Game Pass and Play Anywhere Details
The Xbox release supports Xbox Play Anywhere, meaning a single purchase covers both Xbox consoles and Xbox on PC at no extra cost. Game Pass subscribers on console, PC, and cloud can jump in immediately at no additional charge.
